ECRS 2024 in Naples, Italy!

ECRS 2024 will be held in Naples, Italy at the Città della Scienza and at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station.

For this edition of ECRS, our energies will concentrate on bridging knowledge gaps between tropical, temperate, and cold-water coral reefs.

The symposium will bring together coral reef scientists, researchers, conservationists, policymakers and reef managers to present the latest research findings and exchange current knowledge critical to advising international and national policies in the conservation and sustainable use of coral reefs.

Workshop on coral reef fishes in Maldives – March 2023

Registrations are now open for the Workshop “Coral Reef Fishes: Identification, Ecology, and Challenges in a Warming Ocean” which will be held at MaRHE Center (Magoodhoo, Maldives) from 23 to 31 March 2023.


An exciting full-immersion in the ecology of the tropical fish fauna with lectures, data analysis sessions and scuba diving activities in the beautiful Maldivian reefs. The workshop is aimed at both students (bachelor/master’s degree or PhD courses) and graduates in the scientific field. A diving license is required. After completion of the workshop, participants will be provided with a certificate of practice and knowledge on coral reef fish ecology through the international virtual certification Open Badge issued by the University of Milano-Bicocca.


The deadline for registrations is 10 February 2023.

Call for volunteers at the 15th ICRS

The 15th ICRS in Bremen is approaching quickly, and ICRS will have its own 100-person conference room where its chapters can present themselves and interact with attendees of the conference.

The European Chapter of the ICRS will also be present there of course, present a poster about our activities and have a table for meetings and interaction next to the poster.

We are now calling for volunteers to help staff at the European Chapter table in the ICRS room during the meeting in Bremen. Please get in touch if you would like to help out: info@icrseurope.eu or via our website.

In any case, we very much encourage your involvement in the chapter activities – please get in touch! – and hope you drop by the ICRS European Chapter poster/table for a chat during the conference!

Congratulations to our awardees 2022

We received many great applications for the ICRS European grant this year. We are impressed by the blooming community of early stage researchers working on coral reef ecology, biology, preservation and conservation. Congratulations to Robbert-Jan Geertsma (Wageningen University), Henrique Bravo (University of Groningen) and Thea Moule (Bangor University) who were awarded the grant to cover their full registration fee to participate to the 15th ICRS 2022. We are happy to remind you that the application for the grant to cover the 15th ICRS registration fee is still open, but only until tomorrow, Friday April 8th. We highly encourage all ICRS student members from a European institute presenting at the 15th ICRS in Bremen to apply!

The applicant shall send the following documents to icrseurope@gmail.com

1) Motivation letter (max. 300 words)
2) Proof of accepted oral/poster presentation in ICRS
3) Proof of being BSc/MSc/PhD at an European institution
4) Proof of ICRS Student membership
5) Proof of payment for ICRS registration fee (195 Euro online or 510 Euro in person)
6) Abstract of your research to be presented at ICRS 2022
7) Cover slide of your ICRS talk/poster with a picture of yourself

In the motivation letter, we would like you to highlight your financial situation, how the grant will help you, and how it will advance your career to participate in the ICRS 2022. Your application will be evaluated based on your motivation letter and submission of all requested documents.

Grant offer for ICRS 2022

The ICRS European Chapter happily offers this year again to support ICRS student members presenting at the hybrid ICRS Bremen 2022.

Grants will cover in-person and online registration fees, with a preference given to applicants attending in person. To apply, you must also be affiliated to an European institution.

ICRS 2022 Bremen

It has been officially announced: the 15th International Coral Reef Symposium will be in Bremen July 3rd to 8th in Bremen (Germany), in the form of an hybrid conference.

The submission of abstracts (and re-submission of already accepted abstracts) is open until February 23rd.

We can only hope the event will happen as planned, fingers crossed!
